Fall Fun

Fall is the best season in McCall - full of hunting, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking against a backdrop of clear blue skies and harvest colors.

I played hooky last week to travel back to Ohio and welcome my first grandchild to the world. It was a special day — full of ups and downs and lots of emotions, but in the end, Dorothy Jean ended up in my arms in a rocking chair, which means all is well with the world.

In honor of this little bundle of joy, I updated my Strava profile from Mr. Rodney to Dorothy's Grandpa — probably should have made it Dorothy's Badass Grandpa based on my stellar Strava stats, but I'm a humble person (and my stats suck), so Dorothy's Grandpa it is. Maybe it will become Grandpa Rodney. We'll see.

In any event, that's my excuse for sending out the Friday email on Monday.

Fall Fishing Is On

As good as the high mountain lake fishing was all summer, fall is here, and that means hungry, aggressive fish. It also means frosty hikes and cold wind.

Biggest fish of the day — 18 inches and fat. Super fun.

My daughter and I hiked into a fun lake last Saturday morning. The hike in featured colder-than-normal temperatures (36 degrees) and white frost lining the trail. As the day wore on, the sun did its thing, and floating around with a fly rod became enjoyable. Of course, when you've got big cutthroats straining your rod, that helps, too.

My suggestion? Get yourself a forest service map, find a lake, and go exploring. You won't regret it.

Still Time To Ride

It's no secret that some of the best mountain biking is in the fall — and the trails around town are in awesome shape.

I got out for a quick-ish spin with a buddy on Sunday and, as always, fun was had. The dirt was awesome — probably because of all the rain last week — and the CIMBA crew is hard at work fixing berms and filling holes created from a long summer of riding.

We ran into one crew on the Bear Basin Connector trail — they were all smiles and happy to see us out riding. They did tell me to keep the riding a secret — so, if you hit the dirt this week and have an amazing ride, you didn't hear it from me. 😄
